While the system was clearly meant to chamber a larger caliber .300 Win Mag cartridge for an extended range, the Army had the M24 chambered in 7.62x51 NATO for logistical reason, but still allowing the rifle to easily clear an 800m first-round impact range and ample recorded shot past 1000m. The M24 SWS has since been touted as a symbol of the U.S. Army sniper, and the sniper qualification course. Although the rifle is being phased out for the XM2010 and Mk22 SWS, Army snipers still speak of the M24 SWS with great fondness.
