Pak 38: The "meh" Anti-Tank Gun

The German 50 mm Pak 38 (5-cm Pak 38) was the medium anti-tank gun that was introduced into service in 1940. Already during Operation Barbarossa it had a very hard time dealing with Soviet T-34 and KV tanks. The Pak 38 is a bit like the forgotten middle child. Most people know its predecessor the 37mm Pak as the door knocker and also its successor the 75mm Pak 40. This less famous existence actually makes sense, since after the Pak 38 was fielded its limited effectiveness against the Soviet T-34 and KV tanks became apparent. It still was better than 37mm Pak, but it was of limited effectiveness against modern medium and heavy Soviet tanks.
